Here’s a good example of a mysterious honeybee activity: washboarding.
No one is certain of the purpose of washboarding but the most popular view that it is a cleansing action. The bees move back and forth rhythmically with their probosces licking or depositing something on the surface. It seems to happen especially in hot weather and is more often reported in the USA than in the UK.
