Vita Research Awards help unscramble and combat the current honeybee crisis
A project to develop a new, green bio-control agent to combat the varroa mite that is decimating the world’s honeybee colonies has won the Vita 2009 Research Award. Meantime, the results of the Vita 2007 award have just been released providing further evidence that three viruses, almost certainly induced by the varroa mite, are implicated in honeybee losses across the globe. The honeybee crisis: paradoxical findings deepen the mystery

Beekeeping practices must change to ensure that honeybees survive and thrive, says Dr Max Watkins of Vita (Europe) Ltd following one of the worst honey harvests in the UK and Northern Europe for many years. Although poor weather conditions may have badly affected the harvest an array of unexplained research findings indicates a more sinister and long-term challenge.

Top honeybee researcher Norberto Milani dies
Norberto Milani, Professor of Entomology at the University of Udine in Italy and a researcher whose work has made a huge impact upon the world of beekeeping has died at the age of 58. He was a world-renowned expert in entomology, honeybees, mites and pheromones.

Bee virus investigator wins Vita Research Award at Apimondia 2007
The 2007 Vita Research Award has been won by a Jordanian scientist, recognised for his study of honeybee viruses.
Dr Nizar Haddad, of Jordan’s National Center for Agricultural Research and Extension, was presented with the award at Apimondia 2007 in Melbourne, Australia. Read more…
